Owner Reviews, Ratings, Comments and Criticism I was surprised when I started reading this book to see that they use Microsoft Access in the examples. But upon more reflection this makes good sense. Access is the most popular database in use today because it comes with the Microsoft Office suite. A student is far more likely to have access to Access than to the bigger, more professional, and of course much more expensive databases.
For teaching the student about traditional database applications where data is to be simply stored and retrieved the Jet Engine in Access is adequate. Access is easy to use to develop applications. And with small, say 50 megabytes adequately fast.
The tone used in this book is to tell the student more about what databases are for, how they are used and an introduction to actually implementing a project. The book does discuss SQL and goes into database programming. If, however, you down to developing real applications, you'll need another book or two. For instance, each database has its own dialect of SQL with changes in how to program things beyond the basic level, and they have a different set of reserved words.
The book incorporates the new curriculum recommendations in ACM Computer Science Curriculum 2008 and ACM/AIS IS2010 Curriculum Guidelines for IS2010.2, Data and Information Management, including more attention to security, concurrency, and net-centric computing. The chapter on computer ethics has been updated to take into account new regulations and practices; It contains more material on recent and relevant topics, such as Web access, JDBC, web programming, XML, data warehousing, data mining, and other emerging database technologies and applications. It includes the extensive object-relational features of the current release of Oracle, with downloadable code for students to implement. Object-oriented databases are implemented using InterSystems Cache, with downloadable code included on the website.
All in all, a good introductory book that serves as a foundation for the professional to get down into more serious database programming.
